This free annual event is a combination of symposia, hands-on classes and open access to a wide variety of microscopes. During afternoon seminars, academic investigators present inspirational research employing emerging and traditional microscopy. The wet-bench classes are linked to the symposia with a thematic technique or application. It is open to the entire research community and only requires your free registration.
This year's symposia theme is "Optogenetics". Symposium speakers will present research using imaging approaches that employ innovative fluorescent probes. A practical "micro-course" will be offered using confocal microscopes from any major vendor. Although the symposia is thematic, a wide variety of instruments will be available for use with guidance. Whether you are an expert or an absolute beginner, please feel free to come for advice on any application or try out any of a variety of modalities even if you are not attending a class or a seminar.
In order to eliminate the financial barriers and time commitments that often prevent individuals from taking extended microscopy courses, direct access to instruments and expertise is provided free of charge. Interested individuals can use this opportunity to determine whether particular techniques suit their future needs or to get needed advice from vendor representatives on any microscope or application. This is also an unparalleled chance to compare microscopes from many vendors, which is especially convenient when contemplating a purchase or preparing a grant. There are no time commitments required to attend - feel free to visit even briefly. Access to the fully-functional instruments does not require participation in the classes or symposium, but does require your free registration.
In addition to a variety of confocal and widefield microscopes, a two-photon LSM will also be available for use. Registered Workshop participants can book reservations for many of the instruments using the link provided on this website. At least one microscope per room will be available for use on a walk-in basis. Slides and live cell samples will be available for use but feel free to bring your own samples. Please visit the FAQ section if you wish to bring your own sample.
This free event is made possible through the generous support of numerous companies and the office of the YSOM Deputy Dean of Science. Support is also provided by NIAMS (Yale Rheumatology Disease Research Center P30) to advance the use of light microscopy in basic research.
